Community Development

Decker Platt
Sometimes neighbors want parked cars removed, neighborhood flyers developed, or food trucks that are illegally parked removed from the street.  Such was the case in Decker Platt when they asked for assistance on how they could handle those problems.  The Community Building Program helped neighbors get to know one another in their community through activities such as block parties.   They soon discovered they could indeed make changes in their neighborhood, and their excitement empowered them to continue improving their little community.

One of their first projects in Decker Platt was the demolition of an abandoned building.   Community Building worked with the community and specific agencies to help them with this big project.   The Decker Platt community now knows they can count on the Neighborhood Development Program for guidance for community improvements.

The Big Blue Monster in Mt. Auburn
The Big Blue Monster
in Mt. Auburn is not the title of a children’s story.  Residents of Mt. Auburn nicknamed a large house that because it was listed for demolition by the city and left standing too long.  Not only was it an eye sore, it was dangerous as it housed stray animals and often times drug dealers.

The Community Building Program assisted a neighborhood who didn’t know each other, and created a leadership team.  Once that team started, the neighbors didn’t waste time sponsoring block parties to bring the community together to tackle their first problem – The Big Blue Monster.  With the help of the Neighborhood Development Program, the neighbors were put in touch with the right people and agency to have the building demolished.  The neighbor next door purchased the lot as a side-yard, and put a fence around it.  No one could have ever guessed that The Big Blue Monster would have brought people together, and empowered them to make changes in their neighborhood.
